PeerGuardian PG alternative, ipfilter + utorrent, ipfilter.dat

utorrent ipfilter

Whether you are looking for an alternative to PG2 because it fails to function properly, or simply looking to cut down the number of processes you are running – the information here is for you.

It is possible to block ip-ranges with utorrent’s built in ipfiltering system.

First and foremost, you will need the latest utorrent beta. Be sure to check this out if you are noticing degraded download speeds running utorrent in Windows 7. After you finalize your utorrent install, get a blocklist: a good place to get this is at BISS – get nipfilter.dat.gz, open with an archiver and extract the “ipfilter.dat” to C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\uTorrent or its XP equivalent of C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\uTorrent .

A simple way of reaching the utorrent application folder, regardless of the OS, is by typing ‘%appdata%/utorrent’ in the run menu, without the quotes.utorrent ipfilter

Right click > peer traffic logging > Log Blocked Connections in your Logger tab to see it in effect.

Thanks a bunch, your taking the time to help people is worth it! A lot of lives better because of you

  2. Kapil says:

does this work for sure? does my IP address get blocked by doing so? is it safe to use this is colleges in the US?

    • Aleksandr says:

You are much safer running with ipfilter than not. Keep in mind, it only blocks the provided IP range in ipfilter.dat, any other IP may is allowed. Given that you are on a college network I recommend you get Blocklist Manager and download the list which includes EDU and government institutions.

      • Kapil says:

i want my own IP address to be blocked. i dont care about anyone else. also what should i use to block my IP address for downloading through websites and not torrents?

  3. abi says:

I dont have C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\uTorrent or its XP equivalent of C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\uTorrent

    Im using vista business 64bit

so how does my utorrent then connect to this .dat file?

    • admin says:

      Hello abi,
Make sure you have installed and ran utorrent at least once, it should create that directory.

Navigate to your run menu, type %appdata%, and there should be a “utorrent” folder.

There may be a chance the folder is “hidden”, if this is a case simply entering “%appdata%/utorrent” without quotes should take you there.

If you still cannot find it, use Locate32 ( http://locate32.net/files/exe/locate32-x64-3.0.7.7010.exe ) and let it index your harddrive, then simply search for utorrent , inside the folder should be webui.zip.

      Hope this solves your issue

Sure, this is a good alternative until PG2 becomes Vista/Windows7 compatible…..but the bad thing is, PG2 is still great, because it can log “all” connection attempts.

If you were to get one of those C&D letters from the corps…those logs can come in handy, particularly, the logs of “allowed” connections….because, it’s not the “blocked” connections that “caught” you red-handed – but the connections that were “allowed” that were able to snag a couple of bytes for “proof” that you were distributing illegal/copyprotected content, and then persuit it in a court of law/C&D motion/etc….

    Just a word of caution.

Note: I always wear a tiny foil hat when my p2p app is running! :)

Thanks so much for the additional information – you rock! So I will stick with the NIPFilter.

Secondly, is this method of using the filters from BISS and Utorrent really a relible deterant to NOT getting “sniff’d” out by the people who try to to hunt down Torrent sharers.

Plz excuse my n00b-ness as I am new to this and I want to learn as much as possible… and never get caught in the process too. ;-)

  6. Xsya says:

Hello, First off – thank for the advice given on this website much appreciated!

Secondly, I am somewhat paranoid with this kinda stuff. So would it be better if I downloaded the pipfilter.dat.gz and applied that to my Utorrent application. I read the differances between the various ipfilter.dat files here:

    http://blocklistpro.com/faqs/biss-ip-filters-sources-list-faq.html

Any further advice would greatly appreaciated!

  7. sixdoublefive321 says:

aye..I did that and nothing is being blocked; at least nothing is indicating that IPs are being blocked. ipfilter in ADVANCED is *true* and ipfilter is reloaded. Noting but BLOCKED CONNECTIONS is selected in the Log. Maybe it’s a 7 thing.

Here’s a screen grab of what I’m seeing. Removed

Thanks again for the help and sorry for hogging your time. I’m going to keep at it.

    22

  8. sixdoublefive321 says:

I ask because Removed shows someone else’s ipfilter blocking IPs while mine isn’t.

  9. sixdoublefive321 says:

lulz…I can’t seem to get a break…must be karma [BISS](http://blocklistpro.com/download-center/start-download/p2p-ip-filters/1547-nipfilter.dat.gz.html) gives me this `Fatal error – attempt to access unpublished file by non-admin user’

  10. NyaR says:

Haha forgive me for that, it was a direct link to an old version. I actually noticed this and was trying to update it before you attempted to download, but was late by about a minute. Try again now, I have fixed the links :)

  11. sixdoublefive321 says:

Thanks again for the help and fixing that link. ipfilter seems to be working and definately extracted to the right place. How do I discern the blocked IPs from allowed IPs. In PG, there is a color code and I could check it by trying to go to sites like BBC or CIA.

I hate to be a pain about all this…I’m just curious.

  12. NyaR says:

It should be blocking them, even if it does not show it. Too see it visually, go to the “Logger” tab on the bottom, right click on the white space, select “Peer traffic logging”>”Log blocked connections”.
Now it will show only the connections which are being blocked (if you have nothing else checked).
    Hope this helps.

  13. NyaR says:

It says that the ipfilter.dat has been loaded, most likely no bad ips have yet connected to you.
Wait a while, or try loading up a bunch of torrents to attract attention. Beverly Hills Cop is a rather old movie, so I am not sure it is of much interest to the MPAA and others.

  14. NyaR says:

It is aptly referred to as the paranoid list :)
While the Level2 Corp list may be somewhat useful in avoiding detection of unfriendly groups, the majority of peers you will block will be other, normal, users.
That list mostly functions to block advertisements, malicious websites, downloading virus-mp3s from general p2p apps (as they usually originate from the same IPs), etc. This stuff is only useful if you are running it with PeerGuardian or ProtoWall, as it will block stuff outside of utorrent. When running utorrent it is simply detrimental to your download speed with very little, if any, gained security.
So, to summarize, the paranoid list is only useful when used with PG or Protowall, there is very little to gain from it by using it in utorrent. Unless you have specific reason to be afraid of EDU ranges (such as using campus internet) or Microsoft (being a MS employee) I suggest to stick with NIPfilter. There are better alternatives to using PIPFilter, such as AdBlock or Kaspersky ad blocking, etc.
Hope this helps, and excuse my late moderation/reply.

  15. NyaR says:

It is as effective as peer guardian. Of course, it is always limited to the user contributed IPs. The downfall with this is that anti-p2p groups can always connect from different IPs and won’t be noticed.

In short, there is no 100% sure way to prevent being sniffed, but running this should help. Best thing you can do is keep your nipfilter updated to the latest version.

  16. J Tricky says:

    Hi,

Thanks again for your advice I am having the same problem as sixdoublefive321 with PG so I took the steps for nipfilter.dat.gz and put it in my utorrent I believe it is working correctly but I am also very new to all of this and I was wondering if you could tell me how I make sure that my nipfiliter remains up to date.

    Thanks

  17. NyaR says:

you will have to check manually at the said website, it says the date it was updated ;(
