After running the appropriate tool for your installation head to Windows Update and install the provided updates.

Well, I’ve done some in-house testing and have come to a different conclusion. The hardware works perfectly with Windows 7; everything with the exception of webcam is picked up through windows update.

So, in the tradition of messing with Dell’s strategy and giving consumers the ability to do what they want with their purchased products, like overclocking their laptop GPU, here is the guide to getting your Studio 15 webcam working with Windows 7.

Step 1: Update all your drivers. Check that your microphone works: Control Panel > Sounds > Recording
If the green bar goes up when you tap the microphone (hole right next to webcam lens) the green bar should jump. If its not working make sure you have updated your windows. If the driver works fine but you cannot record anything with the microphone: read my comment below.

Step 2: Download driver R213648. You may download it directly from BATP in a non-annoying installer-less zip file.

Step 3: Extract the file somewhere, figure it out.

Step 4: Go to the driver directory, find setup.exe, rightclick on it and go to properties, find the Compatibility tab and select run in compatibility with Vista SP 2. Look at the picture if you get confused.

Step 5: Hit next a bunch of times and reboot your computer.

Step 6: Your webcam now works. Test it out by going to chatroulette (NSFW) and hitting Allow flash or using some sort of software.

Step 7 (optional): Ads don’t pay, donations do. Give me money.

After sending out invites to test Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 last week, Microsoft has given its beta testers their first build of SP1. The build number is 7601.16562.100603-1800, meaning it was compiled on June 3, 2010 at 6pm, according to the German enthusiast website WinFuture. The last build that we got wind of leaked in May, and was compiled on April 21, 2010. Broader testing of SP1 should begin later next month.

On January 30th a supposed leaked Microsoft roadmap made its way to the internet suggesting that Windows 2008 is geared for a 2011 launch.

Neowin’s Tom Warren has speculated that the jump from 7600 to 7700 may suggest some kind of early milestone towards the Windows 8 alpha and beta stage.

Apparently missing the point, or facing an improbable time frame, pandemic has released the patch which still requires it to run under a single core…

If you are using Windows 7 you have to do this:

1.) Boot the game.
2.) Wait for the main menu to load, then press Ctrl-Alt-Delete.
3.) Select Start Task Manager.
4.) If the game is visible, press Alt-Tab, otherwise continue to the next step.
5.) Inside the Task Manager, go to the Processes tab.
6.) Find Saboteur.exe, right-click it, and select Set Affinity…
7.) De-select CPU 2 and CPU 3.
8.) Click OK.

We are currently digging into the issue at hand & are working as fast as possible to find a solution. In some of our tests we have found one workaround that seems to allow users to run the game. Some have posted adjusting the affinity process via “Task Manager” but our fix truly puts the system in a 1 core mode and will allow you to run the game. Overall this is not a final fix, nor a perfectly stable fix, but it will allow you to run the game. This work around is entirely base upon CPU processing power & will possibly only work for certain systems.

Steps to turn off cores: (For Windows 7)
1.) Open MSCONFIG (You can open it by entering MSCONFIG in the search bar)
2.) Select the “Boot” tab
3.) Click on “Advanced Options”
4.) Check “Number of Processors”
5.) Select “1” from dropdown menu
6.) Click “Apply”
7.) Restart machine

Steps to turn off cores: (For Windows Vista)
1.) Open MSCONFIG – Start> Run > Type MSCONFIG
2.) Select the “BOOT.INI” tab
3.) Click on “Advanced Options…”
4.) Select the check box for /NUMPROC= set it to 1 & click “OK”
5.) Click “Apply”
6.) Restart machine

Opinion: EA’s business strategy seems to depend on pushing release dates. Game developers don’t have the time they need to smooth out bugs and finish testing, and consumers are paying for it by buying an incomplete product.

Microsoft has just unlocked the download links on their Beta Office 2010 suite. It is available for both Windows and Windows Mobile platforms.

A new, interesting to watch, feature of Office 2010 is the Outlook Social Connector “OSC”. It features an activity stream (think facebook wall) with support for LinkedIn, facebook and twitter integration will be out at RC or commercial release.

Temporarily bypass Reduced Functionality to rescue your files and operating system capabilities and pave the way for a clean, genuine, windows install.

On the Windows Activation, click on Access your computer with reduced functionality option.

Once the Internet Explorer loads, click on File on menu bar and then select Open on the pull-down menu.

On the Open dialog window, type in C:\Windows\Explorer.exe and then click OK.

Click OK button on “IE needs to open a new window to open this webpage” confirmation prompt.

Click Run button on “File Download – Security Warning” dialog prompt.

Click on Run button on “File Download – Security Warning” warning dialog related to unknown and not verified publisher.

User shell will load, and the desktop, taskbar, start menu and etc will be restored.

The computer has recovered from Reduced Functionality for this session. To permanently stop RFM to happen again, Windows has to be rearmed.

Click on the Windows Start button.

Type Cmd in Start Search box.

A program shortcut will show up in the Start panel search results. Right click on the shortcut and select Run as Administrator.

In the Command Prompt window, type in the following command and then hit Enter: slmgr.vbs -rearm

Restart your computer.

After getting windows 7 I noticed that my downloads of the Linux kernel through utorrent were running at incredibly slow speeds.

Though the reasons behind this may be complicated, the solution turned out to be rather simple.

The first solution is direct, and very simple. You need to disable UPnP port mapping in the settings of utorrent, and run it in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2. For the uninitiated: right click properties of utorrent shortcut, head to compatibility, and make it look like the picture.

Now the second, optional, part will require patching of your tcpip.sys. As you may, or may not, be aware Microsoft introduced a half-open connection limit in XP SP2, and included it in Vista and Win7. As far as the official reason, it was done to hinder the speed at which certain trojans and viruses spread. The real result: slower torrent speeds.

This is very simple. Head over to http://half-open.com/home_en.htm and grab the Half-open limit fix 4.0. Patch it to whatever you need, and restart.

You may also unlock utorrent’s max connections; head over to preferences, Advanced, and find the string net.max_halfopen and increase the numerical value.

Not only unsupported, Mobility Radeons are further crippled by their drivers. Laptop distributors (HP, Dell, Lenovo, etc) limit the clocks on the bundled video cards and restrict access to the GPU BIOS. There are a number of logical reasons behind this, namely warranty overheating issues.

There are a number of ways to work around these restrictions, the best likely being a BIOS mod, as it would allow fluent clock changing through ATT, or other programs. However, some GPUs have their BIOS read and write protected, making the process rather futile.

Another, simpler, method is using a specific driver version. 8.9 and 8.10 Catalysts allow you to overclock when used in conjunction with AMD GPU Clock Tool.

So before we begin, these are the ingredients you want:

To begin, uninstall your current drivers. If you have the Catalyst bundle installed, go to control panel, remove programs, ATI uninstall – remove CCC, Install manager, and Display Driver, reboot.

If you are running Windows 7, load up DSEO and enable Testing Mode, reboot computer.

If you do not have an ATI entry to uninstall in remove programs then head over to device manager (Run “devmgmt.msc”), select your display adapter, right click on it and select uninstall. Your screen will probably flash.

At this point you have the option of booting into safe mode, by pressing f8 repeatedly in between bios loading screen and the windows logo, and running Driver Sweeper to wipe all traces of ATI from your computer.

When this is done boot back to windows and extract the 8.10 drivers you just downloaded. Now run Mobility Modder, point it to the ATI directory that was created, and click Modify.

For Windows 7, there is an extra step. Skip this if you are not running Win7.

Locate atikmdag.sy_ in the ATI folder, use

DSEO to sign the file.

Now go back to device manager by running devmgmt.msc , select your display adapter, and press Update Driver. Navigate to Browse fo r File, Pick from list of drivers, select Have Disk, navigate to the ATI directory which was created *\ATI\Packages\Drivers\Display\LH6A_INF and press OK.

You may be prompted whether you wish to install an unsigned driver, press yes. If you have Windows 7, you have one more step. Use DSEO to s ign the “atikmdag.sys” in your /windows/system32/drivers folder. Now you can reboot.

When windows boots back up, you can use the AMD GPU Clock Tool to change your clocks.

When installing ATT, make sure to check Disable Overclocking, as it will not function properly. Read these notes if installing ATT on Windows 7.

As stated earlier, Windows 7 requires digitally signed drivers. This is a bummer if you want to run an awesome application like ATT rather than crappy CCC. The fix, as you may have guessed, relies on DSEO. Download it, run it, agree to prompts, enable TEST MODE, and reboot.
Following the reboot, install ATT but do not launch it. Instead, head over to its installation directory and locate atitray64.sys and atitray.sys – these are the unsigned drivers.

Launch DSEO, select sign a system file, and manually enter atitray.sys and press ok. Do this one more time for atitray64.sys Now you can run ATT without problems.
